Practical placement in Kolkata, India

Coffee House at College Street

Indian Coffee House at College Street

Haunted, or not haunted, that is the question…

Scooby Doo: Do we have to go inside?
Shaggy: Like, c’mon Scoob, I bet they have some Scooby Snacks in there.
Scooby Doo: Scooby Snacks?! Ro boy!

Almost by chance, I got to visit a very popular meeting place for students and intellectuals in Kolkata. This particular branch of “Indian Coffee House” has quite a lot of history and is the most famous in India, because of the people who came there.

Waiters with weird hats

Just think how many artists and intellectuals got inspired by those weird white hats

As for the menu, one thing I liked (because it’s so rare here) was that the taxes were included in the prices and there was no service charge, meaning you have to tip the waiters yourself. Unfortunately, they didn’t have any of the rice dishes or soups mentioned on the other side of the menu at the time, so I had to drink the cold coffee with cream, even though  I don’t like coffee at all.

Would have been very funny if they said that they don’t have coffee either

And the people were an interesting bunch also: I saw at least 3 guys with very expensive photography equipment showing it off to their friends or girlfriends.

“Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum,
I know a hipster when I see one…”

One thing that will probably bring me back here again, is adda‘s, which this place is also famous for, but I have yet to meet a Bengali person who knows “what” it is or “where” and “when” it is happening, so I could tag along.

If you live in Kolkata, and do know the answers to “when” and “where”, please help me out in the comments section below.
